ASEXUAL CORAL
RESTORATION

Improving the Health of Roatan's Marine Ecosystems

Roatan Marine Park

Coral Restoration aims to assist the recovery of coral species populations and restore reef health through sexual and asexual methods. Staghorn and elkhorn corals’ populations decreased dramatically in the 1980s due to disease.

As branching corals, they provide essential habitats for a range of species on the reef. They are also relatively fast growers and can reproduce asexually through fragmentation, making them suitable target species for the method of coral restoration that RMP is currently using in our program. We grow coral fragments on trees and tables installed in the ocean and then outplant them onto degraded areas of reef once they have grown large enough.

Hug a Tree

Join us in supporting Roatan's coral restoration by adopting your Coral Tree*! Your contribution of $250 will help monitor and maintain the Coral nursery in Roatan Marine Park, which helps sustain the health of coral reefs.

We work hard to keep the nursery healthy and outplant healthy coral fragments onto the reef. As a token of appreciation, we'll attach a tag bearing your name or logo to the tree, and you'll have the chance to join us on one of our nursery dives to clean your very own tree! So, let's #hugacoraltree and make a tangible difference in the reef!
