Roatan's Path to Eco-friendly Livelihoods: Community Development Initiatives
We know of some great ways to make a living besides illegal fishing and we’re educating our local population on their many benefits. Our first Community Development strategy is Community Dialogue Workshops with residents and Interactive Talks with high school students at the Consolation Bay Methodist School and staff at Sun and Fun Tours. In addition to covering effective ways to spend and save, we engage in conversations on how our spending and consumption habits have an impact on our local environment.
Another strategy is offering coaching, technical assistance and vocational guidance to communities on ecologically sustainable alternative livelihoods. One of these communities is Corozal. We are helping them to create an ecotourism business that offers tourists exciting food preparation demonstrations and tastings, the chance to engage with local beekeepers and craft makers and learning about local history. Next time you’re on Roatan, be sure to check whether they are open for business!
